An essential ingredient of success for any DIY artist is maintaining control over one’s vision and voice. There is a common perception in the music industry that artists are relinquishing this control to big-tech platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google, Apple, and Amazon that increasingly mediate music’s distribution, promotion, and monetization. While each platform does have its own distinct audience base and operates on its own rules for displaying and distributing content, this can actually be a benefit rather than a threat to artists. Artists can study and choose such platforms strategically to reach the right fans and audiences in a way that services and augments their creative goals, rather than chasing mass distribution blindly.
