Welcome to the DIY Musician Conference + GENERAL SESSION - The Mentor Vs. The Apprentice: Beatboxing Your Authentic Self to International Stardom
Join CD Baby VP of Marketing Kevin Breuner to hear all about how to make the most of the weekend. Plus, CEO Tracy Maddux will welcome you to the DIY Musician Conference 2018 and officially kick off the best weekend of the year!
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Being independent means carving your own path. That's what father-daughter duo Ed Cage and Nicole Paris did when they followed their musical passion of beatboxing. Caught on video, a YouTube duel springboarded them to international fame, hitting 5 million views within four days. The video has now been viewed over 160 million times when you add in views on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and beyond. The two then had to learn the business fast. If you take away one thing from this presentation it will be how having fun and doing what you love is the best motivation for independent success. Don't miss this conference opening to get in the right DIY frame of mind for three days of learning and fun!

Which Social Platform is Best for You?
An essential ingredient of success for any DIY artist is maintaining control over one’s vision and voice. There is a common perception in the music industry that artists are relinquishing this control to big-tech platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google, Apple, and Amazon that increasingly mediate music’s distribution, promotion, and monetization. While each platform does have its own distinct audience base and operates on its own rules for displaying and distributing content, this can actually be a benefit rather than a threat to artists. Artists can study and choose such platforms strategically to reach the right fans and audiences in a way that services and augments their creative goals, rather than chasing mass distribution blindly. This seminar will give DIY artists and their teams a deep-dive into the unique strengths and mechanics of different online platforms, and how to leverage these mechanics effectively to grow an artist’s reach and community meaningfully, without sacrificing the artist’s creative vision.

Music Law 101: What Every Band Needs to Know
Most bands don’t begin their musical journeys expecting to have disputes. But good bands do go bad, and disputes over songs, band names, finances, and other creative and business matters occur regularly.  Brooks Pierce attorneys Coe W. Ramsey, Thomas Varnum and Amanda Whorton will discuss important legal issues for band members to consider, including ownership of the band’s songs and recordings, protection and use of the band’s name, rights to band income, partnerships and accounting claims, whether your band should incorporate, determining who are the “members” of your band, and whether you should have a formal band agreement among the band members and with side musicians. This insightful and relevant workshop will cover copyright law, trademark law, contract law, partnership and corporate law, and other relevant laws to help your band gain the tools it needs to avoid messy legal disputes down the road.
